Treatment of Tailbone Pain
Chiropractic care can provide lasting relief for selected types of tailbone pain or injuries. We recommend chiropractic care as an initial approach to a tailbone injury, before considering any injections or surgery, when possible.
After a clinical consultation, examination and/or review of imaging study, it is determined if you are a candidate for chiropractic care. If you are not a candidate for chiropractic care, you will be referred out to other healthcare providers.
If your clinical case is accepted, an initial treatment plan is proposed. This treatment protocol is based on the experience of treating many tailbone injuries utilizing one or more of the following :
- Gentle chiropractic methods
- Manual therapy
- Physiotherapy
- Ergonomics
- Rehabilitation Exercises
- Spinal pelvic stabilization
Treatment clinical goals:
- Relief
The goal of relief care is alignment of coccyx and/or pelvis to relieve the tailbone pain.
- Rehab
The goal of rehab care is strengthening the related muscles to keep the coccyx in alignment.
A recent tailbone injury may respond very well to chiropractic care. Pain might be resolved or substantially decreased within a few visits, if the treatment is initiated within three weeks of the injury onset.
Chronic tailbone pain might present a more complicated clinical case that may require a longer treatment program, referral to other specialists or other types of treatment options.
